ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -
Police are investigating a crash after a car ended up on its roof in a creek, killing the driver and injuring her 5-year-old son.
Asheville police said about 9:15 p.m. on Monday a woman was driving along Hendersonville Road near Mills Gap Road when she crossed three lanes of traffic, leaving the roadway and hit a utility pole.
The car broke the pole at its base, then continued to travel further off the road, hitting a tree, fence and an embankment, police said.
Investigators said the car ended upside down in a creek bed, trapping the woman and child.
Police said the driver, 33-year-old Kelly Sheppard, was taken to Mission Hospital along with her son.
Sheppard died from her injuries, but her son was treated for a head wound then released to a friend until his grandparents arrived from Florida, police said.
Police said they are working to figure out what caused the accident.
