Deputies: Man forced way into home, raped woman

COWPENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies are searching for a man who forced his way into a Cowpens home and raped a woman Monday.

About 6:30 p.m. a man showed up at the woman's home off of U.S. 29 and asked to use the phone, which she let him on the front porch, but then forced his way inside the house with a gun, according to Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller.

Mueller said the man raped the woman then left in a newer-model vehicle, possibly silver, gray or light blue in color. The black male suspect was wearing black shorts with green writing and a white T-shirt, Mueller said.

Mueller said the woman did not know the assailant. He said it appears to be a legitimate case. He said they are working with Spartanburg County deputies because they have had a couple of sexual assault cases recently.

Deputies are looking at all of the case to see if they are connected or if the woman was targeted, Mueller said.

Deputies encourage residents to use caution if someone knocks on their door uninvited and not to open it to unknown persons.

Anyone with information on the assault is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC or Det. Tim Clark at the sheriff's office.
