GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greenville Hospital System board approved a $1.6 billion 2013 budget Tuesday, which included the addition of 400 jobs and a 4 percent price increase.

Hospital leaders said the new, full-time jobs will be added in areas like internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology. They said the additions were prompted by a physician shortage in the Upstate.

"Patients will also immediately benefit from greater access to care because of the additional physicians and staff," said GHS Chief Medical Officer Angelo Sinopoli.

The new jobs will mean that GHS, Greenville County's largest employer, will employ more than 11,300 people, leaders said.

Leaders said the price increase is slightly below the consumer price index for medical care services.

The new budget begins Oct. 1.
