SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

One person was wounded and another was arrested after a shooting in Spartanburg on Thursday afternoon, with bullets hitting a nearby daycare, police said.

The shooting happened about 12:50 p.m. near the intersection of Duncan and George streets.

JC Copeland Childcare is located at 442 Duncan St., and the owner of the daycare told FOX Carolina there were children inside at the time, asleep as shots rang out.

Police said that when officers arrived at the scene they found a man lying on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. They said witnesses at the scene reported seeing a small red vehicle fleeing the scene after the shooting.

A short time later, officers stopped a vehicle matching the description provided by witnesses, police said. They said the driver, 19-year-old Antonio Smith, was arrested in connection with the shooting.

"I this case, it turned out well, because the officers conducted an extensive search of the area, and they were able to locate the car," said Capt. Art Littlejohn, of the Spartanburg Public Safety Department.

Smith was charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and shooting into a building.

Police said the victim was conscious when he was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for treatment.

On Friday, the owner of the daycare said no parents dropped their children off following Thursday's shooting.
