Suspect sought in Cook Out assault arrested

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Police said they identified and arrested a man accused of trying to rape a woman at a Cook Out restaurant in western North Carolina.

On Friday, Asheville police said they arrested 22-year-old Kadeem Smith of Jacksonville, FL, in connection with the Sept. 16 assault.

Investigators said the attack happened about 5 a.m. at the Cook Out located at 251 Tunnel Rd. in Asheville.

The woman told police the suspect trapped her in the bathroom and hit her head against the wall several times, knocking her unconscious.

Smith was charged with attempted second-degree rape, second-degree sexual offense, and assault by strangulation. He was given a $600,000 bond.

According to the arrest report, Smith's first court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 1.
