CHEROKEE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Cherokee Indian police said an Indiana woman was killed during a robbery in front of hotel in western North Carolina on Sunday night.

The shooting happened about 10 p.m. in the parking lot of the Fairfield Inn and Suites on Paint Town Road, which is across the street from Harrah's Casino.

Police said that arriving officers found a woman, identified as 76-year-old Barbara Preidt, of Shelbyville, IN, in front of the hotel, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police said that someone wearing a black mask and dark clothing grabbed Preidt's purse and started firing shots.

Witnesses told police that the robber fled toward a light blue or gray full-size truck, possibly a Ford or Dodge extended cab, which headed north on U.S. Highway 19 toward Maggie Valley.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the Cherokee Indian Police Department at 828-269-6601.

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

*Police initially identified the woman as Barbara Preidet, which FOX Carolina since learned from WXIN in Indianapolis that her last name is spelled Preidt.
