Union police said they arrested two students accused of sexually assaulting a classmate while watching a video at school on Monday.
Union Public Safety officers were notified by a school administrator that the 14-year-old girl said the two suspects were sitting next to her when they both tried to force her to touch them inappropriately while also groping her, but she continued to tell them to stop.
According to the police report, one of the teens put a backpack in his lap then exposed himself and tried to make her touch him.
The class was watching a video, and the lights were out when the assault happened, police said.
FOX Carolina spoke with one of the suspects, 17-year-old Christopher Wyatt of Union, who said he didn't do it and has a different explanation for what happened.
"I was sitting in class, then I was trying to go to sleep and her feet and knees where against my desk and I tried to move them out of the way so I could lay down," said Wyatt.
Wyatt's mother Kristy Farr said she wants everyone who was in the classroom at the time of the alleged assault interviewed. She said her son has never been in trouble before.
"If I had been sexually assaulted, I would have been screaming no matter how loud the movie was. I would have let it be known then and gone straight to the teacher in the class," said Farr.
Because one of the suspects was a juvenile, he was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia while Wyatt was taken to the Union County Jail.
Police said both suspects were charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor third-degree.
The Union County School Superintendent Dr. Kristi Woodall said a Union County High School staff member received a report of the alleged misconduct between the students and referred the concern immediately to the administrative team.
Woodall said the school's investigation is ongoing, and the teacher supervising the class where the alleged incident occurred was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation's outcome.
Woodall said the students were suspended pending the outcome of an expulsion hearing.
