UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A man waiting at the Department of Social Services office in Union said he was attacked by a man with a cane Wednesday, according to police.

Union police said they were called to the DSS office on S. Mountain Street where the victim said he was sitting in the waiting room when the father of his ex-girlfriend, whom he has a child with, came into the room and started questioning him.

After exchanging words, the man told police that 58-year-old Michael Kirby took his walking stick, wrapped the handle around the victim's neck and pulled.

Police said the victim was able to push Kirby away, but then Kirby struck the victim in the arm then fled.

Officers later arrested Kirby and charged him with assault and battery.
