SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg police said whoever dumped pink dye into a public fountain ended up costing local tax payers thousands of dollars to repair the damage.

Police said sometime late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, someone dumped pink dye and bubbles into the fountain in front of the Spartanburg County Public Library headquarters, which is located on South Church Street.

Officials believe the person might have been trying to promote breast cancer awareness through what seemed like an innocent act of vandalism - but it ended up costing about $5,000 for the clean up.

"It's activism that has turned into vandalism," said Spartanburg County librarian Todd Stephens. "We're public property and are responsible for maintaining this property, and folks took it upon themselves to make a statement using the fountain."

Police said there were no surveillance cameras monitoring the area at the time, so they're hoping someone passing by might have seen the culprit.
