MCCORMICK, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A McCormick man died Friday morning after he was thrown from his car that got stuck along railroad tracks, according to the coroner's office.

Greenwood County Chief Deputy Coroner Marcia Kelley-Clark said 45-year-old Richard Durant was driving along Highway 221 when his vehicle went off the roadway and lodged onto the tracks.

The accident happened around 3:30 a.m. about three miles from the Greenwood-McCormick County line.

Troopers said Durant was driving south when he ran off the right side of the road, hit a road sign and a railroad crossing sign before being thrown from his car.

Kelley-Clark said it appeared Durant was not wearing his seatbelt. She said he was thrown from his vehicle, causing trauma to his head and body.

The coroner's office is investigating Durant's death, and his toxicology reports will be performed by the State Law Enforcement Division to determine any possible contributing factors.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
