SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Police said they discovered three neighboring businesses were broken into, ransacked and cash was stolen last week.
Spartanburg police were called to the shopping center at 99 Garner Rd. Saturday morning after two separate businesses reported the break-ins.
The burglaries happened at the China 1 restaurant, Cashwell Consumer Loans and a vacant space in between.
According to police reports, someone pried open a door to the empty business then entered the other spaces by making holes in the walls. Owner of China 1, David Lin said he couldn't believe thieves actually went through a wall to get to this money.
"People through the wall, that's really so fresh," said Lin. "That's just not a good idea."
Lin says the heist could have become dangerous very easily, the burglar busted through the wall just inches away from his gas pipe.
"One foot that way, really they could have made the whole building blow up, it was very dangerous," said Lin.
When the thieves broke into Cashwell, they knocked over a file cabinet, opening it and taking the money that was inside, the report said. Police said the subjects also knocked out all of the business security cameras, a fluorescent light was removed and drawers were rifled through.
Police said money was also stolen from a cash register inside the restaurant.
Police say it's the work it took to pull off these crimes that make them unusual.
"It's a lot of effort put in to make this break-in happen," said Cpt. Art Littlejohn with Spartanburg Public Safety. "When you go through walls, that's a lot of work for the amount of gain they were able to get."
If anyone has information about these thefts, they are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
