USC Campus police on hunt for potential gunman

Posted: Updated:

An Upstate college campus is on alert, after a 20-year-old Greenville man threatened to show up with guns, and shoot students.

USC Upstate police and Spartanburg County authorities continue to search for that man Saturday night. Campus police are looking for Jamal Davenport, who recently moved to Greenville.

They say he should be considered armed and dangerous. He's accused of second-degree harassment of a USC Upstate female student, whose relationship with Davenport began online.

"After they met, the young man made it clear he'd like to initiate a more personal, intimate relationship," said Police Chief Clay Peterson. "The young lady indicated to him that was not going to happen, she was not interested and he should leave her alone."

Police say Davenport didn't give up, according to the report he's consistently called and texted the victim from different phone numbers. He claimed he was going to bring guns to campus where she lives, and show her and her friends "who he was."

Police say they believe the threat to be real, finding that he has dangerous roots in Providence, RI, where he recently moved from.

"We have learned he has been affiliated with a local gang in that area," said Peterson.

Police sent alerts out via text messages and emails to students. Many of those students said the messages have made them worry about walking alone.

"I really don't go anywhere alone really, I'm always with my roommate or someone," said freshman Lauren Williamson.

"Just to know he's coming here, I'm being more cautious about stuff like that," said sophomore Brandon River.

Police say if students do see the man, they should proceed with caution.

"We do consider him armed and dangerous, if he is seen do not initiate contact with him, just contact university police," said Peterson.

USC Upstate university police can be reached at 864-503-5911 or extension 5911 from campus telephones.
