GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Authorities have identified the man accused of taking several people hostage and killing another man at a Greer home Sunday night.

The standoff happened about 9:30 p.m. at a home on Skyland Drive.

Campbell said by the time deputies arrived on scene, 30-year-old Shane Young was holding four adults and a child hostage inside the home. She said the SWAT team entered the home, and gunfire was exchanged between deputies and Young. Two deputies and Young were wounded in the exchange, Campbell said.

Barry Wright, of the Greenville County Coroner's Office, said a man identified as 48-year-old Kenneth Horton was found shot to death inside the home. He said it appears Horton died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Campbell said deputies believe Horton was shot by Young while he was entering the home.

Relatives said Horton died a hero when he tried to get Young to leave, who he said was an ex-boyfriend of a woman inside the home.

"[Young] was there to harm someone else other than Kenny, and Kenny stood in that place to protect that one person," said Billy Pittman, Horton's cousin. "So in my eyes, he did die a hero."

Wright said he was told a child suffered shrapnel wounds. He said all of the injured were taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Investigators said the two deputies who were wounded were also treated - one for a gunshot wound to his arm and another for a gunshot wound to his leg.

The deputy who was shot in the arm is expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday afternoon, Campbell said. It is not yet known when the other deputy will be released.

Per sheriff's office policy, the two deputies who shot the hostage taker have been placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation, in addition to the investigation currently being conducted by the State Law Enforcement Division.

The names of those injured were not immediately released.

Young was charged with first-degree burglary. Deputies said the investigation into the standoff continues, and more charges are expected.
