William Guthrie (Travelers Rest Police Dept.)
TRAVELERS REST, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Police said they arrested a Travelers Rest man accused of beating up and biting a toddler.
Travelers Rest Police Chief Lance Crowe said the child's mother notified them of the abuse on Sept. 15 when she noticed bruises on the child's face and head and bite marks on the toddler's body, but she didn't know where they came from.
Crowe said the child was taken to North Greenville Hospital then put into protective custody and officers began questioning everyone involved who was at the child's home the night the abuse took place.
Forensic evidence helped lead officers to arrest William Guthrie, 20, who was arrested on Monday and submitted to a polygraph test where he confessed to assaulting the child, Crowe said.
According to the warrants, Guthrie had assumed the role of father with the child when the assault happened.
Guthrie was charged with first-degree assault and battery and unlawful neglect of a child. He is being held at the Greenville County Detention Center on $50,000 bond.
