SPARTANBURG, SC (AP/FOX Carolina) -

Wofford College's governing board has agreed to add sexual orientation to its anti-discrimination policy.

Students pushed for the change, giving President Benjamin Dunlap a petition with 476 signatures of students, staff, faculty and graduates.

Dunlap says they change conforms the school's policy with a long-standing practice of non-discrimination.

The school already prohibited discrimination based on race, color, creed, religion, sex, age, national original, disability or veteran status.

The policy now reads, "It is the policy of Wofford College to provide equal opportunities and reasonable accommodation to all persons regardless of race, color, creed, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation or other legally protected status in accordance with applicable federal and state laws."

Two student leaders said the change is a step toward acceptance and equality. Alex Hubbard says he hopes more gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students will feel comfortable applying to the school.

Courtney Parsons says a survey last year had shown a culture of apathy rather than hatred regarding gay rights.

Converse College and the University of South Carolina Upstate have similar policies.
