Deputies said a man tried to help a driver with car trouble then ended up robbing him at gunpoint Tuesday.
Spartanburg County deputies said the driver had broken down along Interstate 85 at the New Cut Road exit and was trying to push his car along the exit at about 10 p.m.
The driver was approached by a man wearing a dark-colored hoodie who helped him push the car into the parking lot of Ryder Truck Rentals, according to the sheriff's office report.
When the driver got inside the car to put it into park, he told deputies the man pulled out a black pistol and said "give me your wallet." When he hesitated, the subject cocked the pistol and said, "I'm not playing, don't make me cap you."
The driver showed the man he only had $2 and they argued over his cell phone before the subject fled toward Spring Street, the report said.
"How are you going to rob somebody who's car breaks down? If I had money don't you think I would be driving something that would not break down," asked Josh, the victim who didn't want his last name to be mentioned because he is concerned about retaliation from the thief who is still on the run.
Deputies tried to track the man down and processed the car for fingerprints.
The victim said he did not get a good look at the thief because it was dark.
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
