ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Anderson police officer shot a man who came at him with a knife Wednesday night, investigators said.

Sgt. David Creamer said police were called to the Broyles Street home after they were told Maurice Johnson was trying to hurt himself.

Creamer said that when officers arrived, Johnson was cutting himself on the arm. He said officers told Johnson to drop the knife several times, but Johnson pointed the knife at officers and came toward them. He said an officer fired his gun and hit Johnson in the shoulder.

The State Law Enforcement Division was investigating the shooting.

The officer, who was not immediately identified, was placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation, Creamer said.

Johnson was expected to recover, Creamer said.
