GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Greenville man was sentenced to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of stabbing his girlfriend to death in 2009.

Thirteenth Circuit Solicitor Walt Wilkins said Ralph Hayes Sr., 54, was convicted of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime on Wednesday.

During the court case, evidence was presented that Hayes stabbed his longtime girlfriend Jacqueline Alexander 28 times and left her body in the apartment bathroom between June 7 and 9, 2009, Wilkins said.

After the stabbing, Wilkins said Hayes fled to New York and was arrested in September 2010.

Prosecutors said Hayes had four previous convictions for assault against Alexander.
