CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A North Carolina man is on a mission to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project led him 300 miles from Pittsboro, NC, to the Upstate of South Carolina riding two newly trained wild mustangs.

Jimmy Thomas, a U.S. Army veteran, made the journey, stopping in small towns along the way and depending on the hospitality of strangers. After nine days, Thomas and the two mustangs finally reached their destination at Clemson University.

"We made it to Clemson! It was a long but rewarding trip," Thomas told FOX Carolina on Thursday. "It gave me a new outlook on mankind."

Thomas said leaving out and not knowing where each night would take him showed there was always someone willing to help him out along the way - and said he only had to eat one can of beanie weenies the whole trip.

"I think we really showed the world what a Mustang can do," Thomas said. "These guys are 100 days from wild. They made it all the way. They kept me outta harms way; they kept me outta harms way the whole way. They're awesome."

Thomas rode with other veterans during the trip, raising more than $16,000.

His ride brought him to Clemson University for the Extreme Mustang Makeover competition being held Friday through Sunday at the T. Ed Garrison Arena. The event features 44 newly trained mustangs and their trainers in head-to-head competitions.
