Deputies said someone driving down a Greenwood County road had a disturbing discovery - eight malnourished horses, and in some cases, there was nothing but skin and bone.
Greenwood County deputies charged Shannon Gibson with ill treatment of animals in connection with the neglect.
Greenwood County investigators said the horses were found in bad shape at two locations, some were at Gibson's home while others were found at a farm down the road.
Friends of Gibson told FOX Carolina that she cared for those horses a great deal, and the arrest just doesn't make any sense.
Deputies said someone noticed the horses earlier in October and their health was documented as being either very bad or borderline, and had dirty or no water at all. Six of the horses were seen at a farm not far from Gibson's Kneece Road home, where the other two were kept.
Gibson's friend Kathryn White, who owns 21 horses, and said the neglect accusations are not true.
White said that for a couple of reasons, including that it's harder for some horses to gain weight than others, especially once they get up in age. She also said she's been out there with Gibson and seen the horses.
"I've been on trail rides with her several times," said White. "And all this false information, they said she didn't have any water or no hay, I know that's a lie, because I've been down there and they have these big ol' tubs about this deep."
Deputies said they found similar conditions in August with one of the horses, but the report said White was nursing it back to health after taking it to the veterinarian's office.
Since Gibson's arrest, deputies said her horses have been cared for. She has since been released from jail on bond.
