SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg police arrested a man accused of touching a woman outside a grocery store. Melvin Sims was charged Friday with second-degree assault.

On Monday, a woman told investigators a man approached her in the parking lot of the Food Lion on Garner Road and asked for money. She refused, but said he then began helping her load her shopping bags into her car and touched her inappropriately.

According to a Spartanburg public safety report, she then went inside the store with the man in an effort to get him to stop. As soon as she paid for the items he picked out, the man ran out of the store.

Earlier in the week, police named a homeless man, Robert Pilgrim, as a person of interest in the case. Capt. Art Littlejohn with Spartanburg Public Safety said further investigation and tips from the public led them to arrest Sims. Pilgrim is no longer considered a person of interest.

On Saturday, FOX Carolina was the only station in Sims' bond court. Sims was given a $5,000 cash or surety bond as well as no contact with the victim. Sims could be facing up to three years behind bars and up to a $2,500 fine. Sims' next court date is set for Dec. 28.
