COLUMBIA, SC (AP/FOX Carolina) -

South Carolina star Marcus Lattimore was taken off the field on a cart after taking a hit around the knee against Tennessee on Saturday.

Lattimore was running through the left side when he was upended. He did not get up and trainers immediately rushed to his side and appeared to be working on his right knee. Lattimore missed the final six games of 2011 with a right knee injury that required surgery.

Lattimore appeared to be sobbing in pain and left on a cart with a towel over his head.

After several minutes, Tennessee's players came out to wish Lattimore well. South Carolina's entire team followed as the crowd chanted Lattimore's name.

Lattimore earlier scored on a 28-yard run. The junior came in with 597 yards rushing this season.

Later Saturday, a Twitter account by Gamecocks Athletics reported that Lattimore will likely not be playing the rest of the season, and that he will be evaluated this week.

Support has been pouring in on Twitter, after Lattimore's injury.

Governor Nikki Haley tweeted, "Michael and I ask that you join us and our children as we lift up in prayer Marcus Lattimore and his mother Yolanda Smith in prayer as they go [through] this challenging time. He has been more than just a USC football player but a great role model for our state. May God bless him and his family during this time."

SC native and USC graduate, Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish tweeted, "Marcus Lattimore[, you are] a class act my friend. Get well[. You are] in my prayers. Much, [m]uch [l]ove."

On Sunday, the pastor and members of Lattimore's church in Spartanburg prayed for the running back and his family.

Coach Spurrier made a statement at the SEC teleconference about Lattimore. Spurrier said, "The knee dislocated, but they got it back in quickly. ... Marcus had a good attitude today. He knows what the road ahead is. We all hope and pray he'll be back...Whatever the time frame this knee requires we will have to wait and see. We're optimistic that his football days are still ahead of him."

USC Athletics released an update on Lattimore's condition, "University of South Carolina junior running back Marcus Lattimore suffered a significant impact to the front of his right knee during the Tennessee game on Saturday. The ensuing hyperextension of the knee resulted in injury to several ligaments. There were no fractures or additional injuries, according to team physician Dr. Jeffrey Guy. Lattimore's surgically repaired left knee was uninjured during the play. Lattimore is resting comfortably and will continue to be evaluated over the course of the week. Marcus has already begun the process of prehabilitation prior to surgery and to his eventual return to football."
