SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Police said a drunken man tried to attack a hotel manager with a knife, but he defended himself, hitting the suspect in the head with a Maglite flashlight.

Spartanburg police were called to the Economy Inn on S. Pine Street about 6:15 p.m. on Saturday after the manager tried to break up a fight in one of the rooms.

According to the police report, managers received a complaint about yelling and a possible fight coming from one of their rooms, and when they went to break it up, one of the men was asked to leave.

The victim told police that the suspect, identified as Ronald Frantz, 42, of Spartanburg, was told to leave multiple times but he became combative, said if they tried to make him leave, he would kill them, according to the report.

Then Frantz tried to come at the manager and his wife with a knife, and as he swung at them, the manager hit in him in the head with his large flashlight, knocking him to the ground, the report said.

Police said when they arrived, they found Frantz lying on the ground bleeding. They said when they took him to the hospital he continued to yell threats, curse and was combative, ultimately refusing treatment.

Frantz was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and battery and was being held at the county jail on bond.
