TRAVELERS REST, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A standoff in the parking lot of a popular Travelers Rest store peacefully ended Monday afternoon, according to Police Chief Lance Crowe.

The standoff started about 1:30 p.m. at the Walmart store near the intersection of Highway 25 and State Park Road.

Crowe said the man was armed with a knife and a pistol, and was threatening to hurt himself. He said the man demanded to speak to a woman who was not at the scene.

"She was outside of the entire scene, and responded here," Crowe said.

Just before 4 p.m., officers moved in and took the man into custody. Crowe said the man, who was identified as 50-year-old Bobby Taylor, of North Carolina, was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital for a mental evaluation.

Crowe said that shoppers who were inside the store when the standoff began were kept inside. He also said that traffic was kept out of the parking lot during the standoff.

"This is one of the largest assemblies of law enforcement that I have seen in a long time," Crowe said. "It's a good example of team effort."
