SC approves governor-lieutenant governor ticket

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -

South Carolina's candidates for governor and lieutenant governor will soon run on the same ticket.

With about 78 percent of precincts reporting, nearly 55 percent of voters Tuesday approved a measure to elect the state's top two offices together, starting in 2018.

Approval also means the lieutenant governor will no longer preside over the state Senate.

Former Gov. Mark Sanford pushed the proposal for years. Gov. Nikki Haley has done the same. But it took the guilty plea and resignation of former Lt. Gov. Ken Ard in March for legislators to put the question on the ballot.

If the changes were already in effect, Haley would've chosen Ard's replacement. And former Sen. Glenn McConnell would still be the state's most powerful lawmaker instead of ascending to the lieutenant governor position.
