WATERLOO, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Laurens County deputies said a man accused of killing a Waterloo man was living with the victim when he shot him.

The shooting happened about 1 a.m. at a home near the corner of Mercy Lane and Rider Road.

Investigators said a couple got into an argument and the man fired shots, killing 65-year-old Bill Ardis.

Deputies said 41-year-old Phillip Hollingsworth left the scene of the shooting in Ardis' vehicle with Ardis' pistol and his girlfriend, 24-year-old Shayla Gaines.

Family told FOX Carolina that Ardis had allowed Hollingsworth and Gaines to live with him and gave Hollingsworth a job with his roofing company.

Gaines told investigators that she convinced Hollingsworth to get out and get something at a convenience store in Greenwood County, and she drove away and called police.

Capt. Ray Watson, of the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office, said Greenwood County School District 52 placed its schools on lockdown while deputies searched for Hollingsworth. The lockdowns were lifted by 10:30 a.m.

Just before 4 p.m., Lt. Judy Stiles, of the Laurens County Sheriff's Office, said Hollingsworth turned himself in to deputies in Greenwood County. She said Hollingsworth was brought to the sheriff's office for questioning.

Investigators said Hollingsworth was not cooperating before they took him to the detention center and that he spent much of the night on suicide watch before he was booked.

Gaines spent most of the day at the sheriff's office being questioned, and by 6 p.m. the sheriff's department arrested her, deputies said. They said through the course of her statements she contradicted herself.

Deputies charged Gaines with accessory after the fact to felony murder and grand larceny, in connection with the theft of Ardis' truck.

Hollingsworth was charged with murder, kidnapping, grand larceny and two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Deputies said the kidnapping charge was in connection with holding Gaines against her will on Thursday.

He and Gaines are being held at the Laurens County Jail. They are scheduled to appear before a judge Friday afternoon.

Deputies said Ardis owned Ardis Roofing in Greenwood.
