BEREA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Students throughout the Upstate got to learn the importance of America's war veterans from the heroes themselves.

Several schools were paid a visit from local veterans, including Marines who served during World War II who spoke at Berea Middle School.

On Monday morning, each class got to meet four former Marines who told students their stories of survival and hardship while battling enemies from Europe and Asia.

"I love this country," said Stuart MacDonald, former Marine, "so I hope my presence here teaches kids why I love America and why they should love it, too."

Veterans Day was observed Monday even though the holiday was Sunday, so banks and federal buildings, including the post office, were closed.

Students at Greenville Sr. High, Hillcrest High, Oakview Elementary, Paris Elementary, Rudolph Gordon Elementary, Simpsonville Elementary and Skyland Elementary have ceremonies and Veterans Day events scheduled throughout Monday.
