SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Police said they were able to arrest a man accused of trying to choke a woman after he rode on the hood of a car as the victim tried to get away.

The victim told Spartanburg police that she was dropped off at a local apartment complex 30 minutes late and got in an argument with the suspect, 20-year-old Broughton Nesbitt. She said she wanted to avoid the confrontation, so she called her friend to come pick up her, according to police.

The police report said when the friend arrived, the victim got into the passenger seat then Nesbitt tried to choke her and pull her through the open window.

The woman's friend tried to drive off, but Nesbitt sat on the hood of the car and would not jump off, police said.

The woman drove to the Quick Trip on W. Main Street to get help, with Nesbitt holding onto the hood the whole way there, the report said. When police arrived, they said it took four officers to control and arrest Nesbitt.

Nesbitt was first taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for treatment then to the county jail, where he was later released. He was charged with third-degree assault and battery.
