TRAVELERS REST, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A popular Travelers Rest eatery that was destroyed by fire Thursday may have been intentionally set, according to investigators.

North Greenville County Fire Chief Lee Kelly said it may have been arson and they are investigating the fire further after the blaze destroyed Traveler's Restaurant along U.S. 25 early Thursday morning.

Kelly said they have sent samples to be tested to see if accelerant was used. He said the fire started in the back corner of the restaurant where dishes were cleaned, but there was no cooking equipment where the fire started.

Greenville County deputies were called in to assist with the investigation.

According to the restaurant's Facebook page, Traveler's Restaurant was established in 1959 and has been family-owned since 1974.

The restaurant was able to salvage food from the freezer, which was donated to local food bank. The owner told FOX Carolina on Monday that they plan to rebuild.

A fund was set up for the restaurant's employees. Anyone who wants to help can go to any Bank of Travelers Rest branch and make a donation to the Traveler's Restaurant Employee Fund.
