Haywood County firefighters battled a blaze that broke out at Haywood Community College on Monday that has closed the school for at least a day.
Dispatchers told FOX Carolina that calls came in for the fire just after 9:30 p.m. Monday, initially reporting a fire in the woods near the campus.
Once firefighters arrived on scene, dispatchers said they found a fully-involved commercial structure fire in the back of the HCC campus near a saw mill.
Six fire stations and the fire marshal were on scene Monday evening to contain the fire, taking them two hours to contain it. Haywood County EMS and Rescue were on scene as a precautionary measure.
Firefighters said the building was destroyed. They said was a sawmill that housed wood and heavy machinery. There were no injuries reported.
HCC posted on their school website that only emergency personnel were to report to campus on Tuesday. Interim president William Aiken told FOX Carolina the decision to close the school was made because of student safety and not to interfere with the investigation.
Aiken said no classes were currently being held at the sawmill and most of the equipment had been removed from it and sold prior to the fire.
