The man who was shot by two deputies at a party in Conestee last month has been charged in connection with the shooting, according to Greenville County deputies.
Deputies said they responded to 712 Sixth St. about 12:15 a.m. Oct. 7 after receiving noise complaints. They said a large party and bonfire were found at the home.
Investigators said that while deputies spoke with several people at the home, 33-year-old Michael Henderson got a handgun from a car. They said deputies ordered Henderson to drop the gun several times, but he refused. They said that when Henderson turned toward the deputies while still holding the gun, the deputies opened fire.
"We basically transferred that use of force decision to Mr. Henderson and he refused to comply," said Deputy Laura Campbell with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office. "When he turned to those deputies and raised the weapon, both deputies were in fear for their life and shot the suspect."
But friends and family of Henderson said he was actually putting the weapon down when deputies fired five shots, three of those bullets hitting him in the stomach. His loved ones are very upset he remains in jail for the incident.
"It hurts, it's hard on everybody because we know him," said a family friend who was at the party and wanted to keep her identity private. "He's not that kind of person."
"He did not shoot at the cops, he never fired," she said. "He didn't point it at the cops, he was laying the gun down."
On Tuesday, Henderson was charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of pointing and presenting a firearm. He is being held at the county jail.
Witnesses at the scene told FOX Carolina that they feel the deputies did not give Henderson enough time to put down the gun before they fired.
