PELZER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville County deputies were investigating a shooting near Pelzer on Tuesday evening.

Deputies said the shooting happened about 6:15 p.m. on Highway 418, near Fairview Road.

The victim and his wife told investigators that they were driving to the victim's birthday celebration when a man they knew from high school started following them.The wife said they tried to lose him in their car, but he pulled up beside them, waived a gun and fired. She said at first, they hadn't realized the bullet hit through the door handle. She said the bullet struck her husband in the arm and stomach.

Deputies said the wounded man called for help as he drove to the intersection of Long Cane Lane and Highway 418, where an ambulance took him to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The victim told deputies that the alleged shooter was infatuated with his wife and that she had problems with him about a year ago.

The victim's wife said he went into surgery, and sheriff's deputies said he was in good condition.
