WATERLOO, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Laurens County deputies are investigating a death after a body was discovered in a field that caught fire on Saturday.

Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain said someone called in a brush fire about 4:30 p.m. along Flymm Smith Road in Waterloo. He said they found a male body in the fire and the person died at the scene.

"We'll know more definite results when an autopsy is performed," Chastain told FOX Carolina. "It could be a variety of things from a natural death to foul play, but at this point we are treating it as suspicious."

The Laurens County Coroner's Office, sheriff's office and fire officials are investigating the death as suspicious.

Laurens County Coroner Nick Nichols performed an autopsy on Monday but said the cause of death was still under investigation. He identified the victim as Eddie Medlin, 49, who lived right next to the fire.

Nichols said Medlin's death was being investigated as suspicious pending toxicology reports.

No other details have been released about the investigation.
