A Spartanburg police officer working extra duty at a local Walmart on Black Friday said he was punched by a drunken shoplifter while trying to detain him.

About 11 p.m. on Friday at the Dorman Centre Walmart, Spartanburg police said a store security guard noticed a man who appeared intoxicated walk through the register area without paying for several items.

When the police officer tried to stop the man, identified as 41-year-old Dedrick Belle, police said he was aggressive and tried to run away. As he ran, the security guard tripped Belle and when the officer tried to take him into custody, Belle punched him in the face, police said.

The police report said the officer tried to spray Belle with pepper spray, but he ran away before he was finally caught in the parking lot.

Belle was arrested and charged with public disorderly conduct, second-degree assault and battery and shoplifting.
