Police: Men fire at duplex after being caught breaking in

Posted: Updated:

The bullet holes through one duplex on James H. Young Street only tell part of what happened there Sunday night.

As one witness described it, she said, "I was scared last night. I couldn't get any sleep."

That witness, who wanted to remain anonymous, saw it all happen - the gunshots, the suspects running, and she's been going over it all day.

"Stuff was going through my head like, this might happen next, and all that," she said. "I was just so scared."

It was just after 9 p.m. when Spartanburg Public Safety officers said a man noticed three other men trying to break into a duplex where he was visiting friends.

"He went towards that residence to see what was going on, and around that time, that gentlemen that he saw started shooting at him," said Spartanburg Public Safety Captain Art Littlejohn.

Witnesses said the gunfire and chaos lasted two minutes. In the course of that time, officers said seven bullets hit the home, with some going inside.

"There were bullet fragments inside the house, some was near a sofa," said Littlejohn. "My understanding was that there was a lady sitting on the sofa that had a child with her."

No one was hurt in the shooting, but there are a lot of frayed nerves.

The witness admitted, "I don't want to stay here anymore."

Officers said calls to come to the duplex, which is owned by the Spartanburg Housing Authority, are few and far between. Right now, people in this neighborhood want the people who did this caught.

When asked if she'd be able to sleep tonight, the witness said, "I can try. I think I can try."

Anyone with any information on the suspects in this case is asked to call the Spartanburg Public Safety Department or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
