Gaffney man killed in car crash

GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Gaffney man is dead after a single-vehicle crash in Cherokee County.

Coroner Dennis Fowler said 56-year-old Thomas Alan Wheeler was driving west on Highway 211 about 15 miles south of Gaffney.

Around 5:20 Friday afternoon, the coroner said Wheeler drove off the side of the road and hit a tree.

We're told Wheeler was entrapped when first responders arrived.

He was removed from the vehicle and died at the Upstate Carolina Medical Center shortly before 7 p.m.

The coroner said an autopsy will be performed on Saturday to assist with the investigation into Wheeler's death.
