Teresa Olvera (Spartanburg Co. Detention Center)
SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Spartanburg police said a drunk woman trying to get a ride stole someone's car at a gas station, then crashed it before leaving the parking lot.
Spartanburg Public Safety officers said they were called to the Spinx station on W.O. Ezell Boulevard just after midnight on Sunday where they found a car crashed into the Spinx sign, knocking out power to the sign.
As they spoke to witnesses, police said the owner of the Lincoln was trying to help another car jumpstart their car's battery when the suspect, 35-year-old Teresa Olvera, asked for a ride and was refused.
Next thing the witnesses knew, Olvera had jumped into the Lincoln and tried to drive off, hitting another car in the parking lot before crashing into the sign, police said.
One of the responding officers had detained Olvera and sat her in the backseat of a patrol car where police said she refused to answer their questions, gasping for air and crying, partially undressed.
According to the police report, once Olvera was taken to the county jail, she began cursing at officers repeatedly and denied driving the car. The report said officers were able to collect a blood sample to report her blood-alcohol level.
Police charged Olvera with driving under the influence and grand larceny. She was later released from jail on bond.
