2 elderly women hit by cars outside Powdersville church

Posted: Updated:

Two elderly women were hit by cars while crossing a road Sunday - one while going to the church and the other while leaving.

The first crash happened while an 82-year-old member was walking across Powdersville Main after parking near a cemetery across the street from Siloam Baptist Church.

"She was making her way towards the sanctuary and she was hit," said Dr. Wayne Dickard, pastor of the church. "It didn't appear that the driver was driving extremely fast."

Dickard said the crash surprised him because there has never been an accident there.

"The church was formed in 1828," Dickard said. "Almost 200 years old and never an incident."

But Dickard would be even more surprised when about an hour and a half later, a second woman, 85, was also hit by a car while crossing the same street.

"It was surprising and upsetting," said David Woodson, who witnessed the crash. "One happened at the beginning of service, as she was coming in, and one at the close of the service, after it was all over."

Dickard said he visited both of the women in the hospital Monday, and both seem to be doing well.

"I'm sure they'll make it through this, with God's help," Dickard said. "We're praying for his healing power over both their lives."

Troopers said neither of the drivers who hit the women were ticketed.

Neighbors said a lower speed limit or a crosswalk might prevent future crashes.
