UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Union man who was trying to save his dog was badly burned in a house fire Wednesday night, according to his family.

The fire happened about 11 p.m. at a home on College Street.

Firefighters said the home was engulfed in flames when they arrived.

Jerry Brown, the victim's brother, said this isn't the first time his family had to deal with a house fire.

"My brother's house down the road here burned up four or five years ago," Brown said. "[You] go to bed and wake up, at first for the first few months, thinking about that. Now, my other brother's house [has] burned."

Brown said he doesn't believe his brother's dog escaped the fire.

Firefighters are still trying to determine how the blaze started.

Brown said his brother is recovering at the Augusta Burn Center.
