GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Local firefighters battled a fire at the BMW manufacturing plant in Spartanburg County Thursday night.
Spartanburg dispatchers said the Pelham-Batesville Fire Dept. was assisting the BMW Fire Department at the plant and had been at the scene since at least 9:30 p.m.
A spokesman for the plant, Steve Wilson, said the fire was in the roof of an area under construction where the X3 is assembled. Wilson said they're expanding that hall so construction crews have been working in the area, which is on the east end of the plant.
Officials said no associates were nearby when the fire started and no one was hurt. Everyone in that part of the building was evacuated, approximately 800 to 1,000 people, according to Wilson.
Wilson said the fire is under control and a fire engineer will inspect the roof. Firefighters do not yet know how the fire started.
