CENTRAL, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Pickens County deputies said the roommate of a Clemson student who was shot to death Saturday night was arrested on a drug charge.

The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. at The Homes at Chimney Ridge on Smoke Rise Drive, a gated, off-campus community that caters to Clemson students.

Investigators said 23-year-old Steven Grich, a sophomore electrical engineering student from Fort Mill, was killed when some people broke into his apartment.

After the shooting, police advised students to lock their cars and homes, not to open the door for strangers and to report any strange activity.

On Monday, deputies said they arrested Grich's roommate in connection with marijuana found in the apartment. They said 29-year-old Robert McKinley was charged with simple possession of marijuana. They said McKinley was out of jail on bond for drug charges earlier this year.

Investigators said they are looking for a black 2005 Dodge Durango with silver wheels, tinted windows and blue tinted headlights in connection with Grich's death.
