REMBERT, SC (WIS) -

REMBERT, SC (WIS) - Officials with the South Carolina Department of Corrections are looking for an inmate who walked away from the Wateree River Correctional Institution in Rembert.

The Department of Corrections says 34-year-old Andrew McElrath was not accounted for during roll call at about 4:40 p.m. Saturday.

"We don't feel like he got very far," said SCDC spokesperson Clark Newsom. "We believe he is still in the area."

McElrath was serving a sentence for a conviction of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle out of Anderson County.  He was a little more than two months into a sentence that would run until May, 2013.

Officers with the Department of Corrections, SLED, Sumter and Kershaw County are looking for McElrath.

He is described as a white male, about 5'9" tall, 164 pounds and wearing a tan uniform with "SCDC" on the back.

If you see him, you are urged to call 911.

Newsom said SCDC officials are trying to determine how McElrath managed to escape.
