UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate man is accused of stealing $1,250 from his girlfriend, who was saving the money to buy her son's Christmas gifts on layaway, according to police.

A Union police report said the victim told them she saw Otis Lipscomb III, 31, with the cash after he took it from under her mattress where it was hidden.

The woman told police that Lipscomb also took her mother's coat that had several hundred dollars in a pocket. When the woman asked Lipscomb for the money back, he told her he wouldn't give anything back to her or her mother, the report said.

Police said the woman's mother also filed a report saying she told Lipscomb not to take her coat because it had $750 in the pocket, but Monday morning, he left his coat in the place of hers and walked out wearing it.

Police later arrested Lipscomb and charged him with two counts of petit larceny and trespassing after notice.
