Phoenix police said the death of a 2-year-old girl at a home-run babysitting service is "suspicious" and is being treated as a homicide.
The child died while at a hospital after she was found not breathing about 7 a.m. at the home in the area of Southern Avenue and 45th Street, said Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department.
Crump said there were obvious signs of trauma to the child.
Crump said the child was there under unusual circumstances and that the mother of the deceased child often would leave her for days or weeks at a time, and that the mother had not been located by 10:40 a.m.
Police said she was located later in the day but her name was not released. She was being questioned by authorities.
Crump said the child had been at the home for several months with little if any contact from a parent or guardian. He said the child had been at the home since July and that the mother would periodically show up to pick up the child or pay for the service.
Four other children were in the home at the time, including two belonging to the couple running the home business that is advertised on Craigslist, according to the spokesman. A woman inside the home was performing CPR on the little girl when officers arrived, Crump said.
Child Protective Services was called to help investigate and care for the other children.
The couple was being questioned by police but there was no suspect identified, Crump said.
