RUTHERFORDTON, NC (FOX Carolina) -
A Rutherfordton police officer stabbed a man in the shoulder during a scuffle Wednesday afternoon, according to Rutherford County deputies.
The incident happened at 4:17 p.m. near the intersection of Piedmont Road and Highway 108.
Deputies said police were notified that a man, identified as 44-year-old Loyd Carswell, of Morganton, had left the emergency room of Rutherford Regional Hospital. They said Officer Dustin Owens found Carswell walking along a road, and when he tried to get Carswell to return to the hospital, a struggle began and Owens was hit in the face.
During the struggle, Carswell tried to grab Owens' gun, deputies said. They said that Owens then pulled out a knife and stabbed Carswell in the shoulder in an attempt to free himself.
Both Owens and Carswell were treated and released from the same hospital from which Carswell fled, deputies said.
Carswell was being held in the county jail on charges of felony assault on a law enforcement officer, assault by strangulation and assault on a government official, deputies said.
