ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Asheville police said a 3-year-old child died after the car she was riding in went airborne, hitting two people before coming to a stop and crashing in a parking lot on Wednesday.

About 4:40 p.m., police said a man was driving a Ford Fusion east on Hilliard Avenue when he crashed near Grove Street, but the car continued at a high speed through the intersection of Hilliard and Biltmore avenues onto South Market Street, where the car flew over an embankment.

Police said the car landed in the City of Asheville Public Works' rear parking lot on South Charlotte Street, hitting two parked vehicles and two Public Works workers, one of whom is being treated at Mission Hospital with critical injuries. Officers said the second worker received minor injuries.

The driver and his daughter were also taken to the hospital, where the girl died Thursday morning, police said. They said charges are pending against the driver, identified as 37-year-old David Jones, of Mars Hill, NC.
