SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
An Abbeville woman pleaded guilty Thursday to 10 counts of preparing materially false income tax returns.
Prosecutors said that between 2006 and 2008, 48-year-old Sandra Burton operated a tax return preparation service in Abbeville. They said an unusually large number of returns she had prepared claimed education credits and IRA contributions, which triggered an investigation.
An undercover agent of the Internal Revenue Service had Burton prepare a tax return, prosecutors said. They said the return included both an IRA deduction and education contributions to which the agent was not entitled.
Burton faces a fine of $250,000, three years in prison or both for each of the 10 counts.
