WALHALLA, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A helicopter was needed to rescue an injured hiker in Oconee County on Thursday afternoon.
Oconee County Fire Chief Charlie King said the woman was injured in a fall while hiking with her daughter in the Ellicott Rock Wilderness Area. He said the daughter was able to signal another hiker for help, who then hiked three to four miles from the area to call 911.
Rescuers were able to reach the injured woman after hiking for nearly two hours, King said. He said they then called in a helicopter to fly the injured woman to a waiting ambulance.
The woman was taken to Oconee Medical Center to be treated for her injuries, King said.
King said the woman and her daughter brought along all the necessary supplies and had a plan in place in case of an emergency. He encouraged all hikers to do the same.
