Deputies in a western North Carolina town said they are investigating the double-fatal shooting of a woman and her 86-year-old bedridden mother Friday night.
Madison County deputies said they were called to a Foster Creek Road home in Marshall about 9:22 p.m. where one adult and two children barricaded themselves in the basement, telling law enforcement that James Lagrua, 61, had shot his wife and was still firing shots inside the home.
Deputies said they found Lagrua's wife, Stephanie Lagrua, 58, lying dead in the kitchen and then found her mother, Hilma Barnett, lying in bed still alive but suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Deputies said Barnett died on the way to Mission Hospital.
Deputies said they were able to arrest Lagrua and take his three weapons without injury upon arrival, finding him outside of the home. Lagrua is being held on no bond on two counts of murder, deputies said.
There is no history of known reported domestic violence at the residence and it is unclear at this time why Lagrua went on the shooting rampage, deputies said. They said Lagrua has no prior criminal history. The State Bureau of Investigation and the Madison County Sheriff's Office are investigating.
Sheriff Buddy Harwood said that this is a heartbreaking tragedy for the family and the typically quite Foster Creek Community.
