MAULDIN, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Mauldin police said a man was robbed at gunpoint in a parking lot, but fired back, hitting the robber.
Police said a man was selling a cell phone outside of the Bi-Lo store on West Butler Road on Sunday when the buyer robbed him of his cell phone and wallet.
When the robber turned away, police said the victim pulled out a gun and shot him. Investigators said the robber took off in his car but crashed into the Little Caesar's in the nearby strip mall, so he got out and ran away on foot before police found him lying behind the CVS pharmacy.
"We do have the right as citizens to protect ourselves," said Det. Benjamin Ford with Mauldin police. "So it's hard to say if he did the best thing or not. Obviously he did try to protect his property and himself. And it worked out OK because we caught the bad guy, and the victim he's shaken up for what he did. He's shaken up, it wasn't intentional or anything, he was just trying to protect himself."
Police said the robber is being treated at Greenville Memorial for non-life-threatening injuries.
